What is an extreme risk protection order (ERPO)?

An ERPO is a civil order, also known as a red flag law which a judge can issue to allow police to come into your home and remove your firearms and ammunition. 
It makes is illegal for you to possess or purchase firearms. A judge will hear a case for an ERPO if someone files a petition against you.

Who Can File Such A Petition and when?

Believe it or not a lot of people can file for this order for a number of reasons.

Who Can File

Spouse.
Relative by blood, marriage, or adoption.
Person with child(ren) in common.
Someone you are dating or a current intimate partner.
Cohabitant.
Current or former legal guardian.
A neighbor or “friend”.
Law enforcement officer.
A medical professional who has examined you.

When Can They File

Any of these Individuals can claim you are an extreme risk by filing out a form and stating that you show one or more of the following behaviors or conditions.

alarming behavior and statements
unlawful firearm possession
drug and/or alcohol abuse
reckless or negligent firearm use
violence or threats of violence to self or others
violating peace or protective orders
information contained in health records
